Why Therapy
When the path forward isn't obvious
Through no fault of our own, our minds and bodies don't always work the way we'd like — and the solutions aren't always intuitive. Therapy gives you the understanding, and the tools, to change that.
What makes SBHS different
Most therapy starts with a method. We start with a question — what's actually driving this? — then match the treatment to the answer.
An everyday example
Why the obvious fix often isn't
Consider insomnia. Many people spend every night tossing and turning, never leaving the bed, until they eventually fall asleep — and in some cases that very approach makes the insomnia worse and last longer. The intuitive response (try harder to sleep) is exactly the wrong one.
Psychotherapy provides education about these kinds of phenomena, then trains you in new, evidence-based ways to overcome behavioral and emotional challenges. The right method — for insomnia, that's often CBT-I, considered the gold standard even over medication — changes the outcome. The hard part isn't effort. It's knowing which lever to pull.
How we work
Assessment first, then the right treatment
The usual path
A method is chosen up front and applied. When it helps, that's a good outcome. When it doesn't, the conclusion is often "therapy didn't work" — even though the real issue may have been a mismatch between the treatment and the underlying condition.
The SBHS path
We start with a precise, investigative assessment of what's actually going on — because similar symptoms can come from very different conditions. Then we match you to the evidence-based treatment best suited to it, provide it ourselves, or refer you to the best-fit provider. The goal is your result, not just another appointment.
A good fit when…
When to consider SBHS
Uncertain or undiagnosed conditions
Sometimes you just need to know what your condition is — and a few key principles about it — and then you can move forward on your own. Other times you've been given different or unclear opinions about a diagnosis. If that's been your experience and you're not getting better, a specialty evaluation can give you the clarity you need.
Previous treatment without results
Even with the right diagnosis, therapy isn't always as effective as hoped. Working with a provider who takes an investigative, research-minded approach can help figure out what needs to change for a treatment plan that finally works — sometimes a different method, sometimes a more precise target.
Straight talk
When another path fits better
We'd rather tell you the truth than book an appointment that won't serve you. SBHS may not be the right fit if:
- You're in an immediate crisis or need emergency care — please call or text 988, or dial 911. SBHS is an outpatient practice, not a crisis or emergency service.
- You need 24/7 or inpatient/hospital-level support — those needs are better met by a facility equipped for round-the-clock care.
- You're looking only for medication management — Dr. Williamson is a psychologist, not a prescriber; we can coordinate with your prescribing provider.
Not sure where you fit? That's exactly what the free 15-minute consultation is for — and if we're not the right place, we'll help point you toward one that is.
Get the clarity you need to move forward.
